Computing core/periphery structures and permutation tests for social relations data

چکیده
The core/periphery structure is ubiquitous in network studies. The discrete version of the concept is that individuals in a group belong to either the core, which has a high density of ties, or to the periphery, which has a low density of ties. The density of ties between the core and the periphery may be either high or low. If the core/periphery structure is given a priori, then there is no problem in finding a suitable statistical test. Often, however, the structure is not given, which presents us with two problems, searching for the optimal core/periphery structure, and devising a valid statistical test to replace the one invalidated by the search. UCINET [Borgatti, S.P., Everett, M.G., Freeman, L.C., 2002. UCINET for Windows, Version 6.59: Software for Social Network Analysis. Analytic Technologies, Harvard], the oldest and most trusted network program, gives incorrect answers in some simple cases for the first problem and does not address the second. This paper solves both problems with an adaptation of the Kernighan–Lin search algorithm, and with a permutation test incorporating this algorithm. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

On the Society of Genome: Social Affiliation Network Analysis of Microarray Data
To investigate the structure of the genomic interaction network built from yeast gene-expression compendium dataset of hundreds of systematic perturbations, social affiliation network analysis methodologies were applied through quantifying various density, closeness and centrality measures and exploring core-periphery structures. Genes affected by a larger number of perturbations were found to ...
متن کاملMulticore-periphery structure in networks
Many real-world networked systems exhibit a multicore-periphery structure, i.e., multiple cores, each of which contains densely connected elements, surrounded by sparsely connected elements that define the periphery. Identification of the multiple-periphery structure can provide a new handle on structures and functions of various complex networks, such as cognitive and biological networks, food...
متن کاملCore-periphery Structures: Operationalizing patterns of dependence and dominance in binary and valued networks
With origins in the postwar development discourse, the core-periphery concept has spread all over the social, and increasingly the natural, sciences. Used initially to denote two broad regional categories distinguished by differences in socio-economic parameters, its structural connotations paved way for more relational, and less attributional, specifications. As reflected in the blockmodeling ...
متن کاملUnifying Inference of Meso-Scale Structures in Networks
Networks are among the most prevalent formal representations in scientific studies, employed to depict interactions between objects such as molecules, neuronal clusters, or social groups. Studies performed at meso-scale that involve grouping of objects based on their distinctive interaction patterns form one of the main lines of investigation in network science. In a social network, for instanc...
متن کاملDensity-Based and Transport-Based Core-Periphery Structures in Networks
Networks often possess mesoscale structures, and studying them can yield insights into both structure and function. It is most common to study community structure, but numerous other types of mesoscale structures also exist. In this paper, we examine core-periphery structures based on both density and transport. In such structures, core network components are well-connected both among themselve...
